Suspected Boko Haram Insurgents Attack Mafa Village in Yobe, Set Shops and Houses Ablaze

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Mafa village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, looting and setting ablaze shops and houses. The attack occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

The Yobe State Police Command Spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu. He stated that the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, although several lives were reportedly lost during the assault.

According to reports from Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim, residents of Mafa who reported the incident to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station, the attackers arrived on more than 50 motorcycles armed with rifles and RPGs. They wreaked havoc on the village, setting fire to numerous shops and houses.

“The terrorists also killed many people, but we are yet to ascertain the actual number of the casualties,” DSP Abdulkarim said. He also noted that the attackers left behind flyers with Arabic inscriptions.

In a related incident, three students of Faudiya School in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State were confirmed dead following an attack by gunmen on the school earlier on Friday. The security situation in the region remains tense as authorities continue to respond to these incidents.
