Eight lawmakers who were suspended by the Zamfara State House of Assembly have spoken out, alleging that they were forced to flee the state by political thugs for exposing the escalating insecurity. They also mentioned receiving a directive from the House to return their official vehicles to the Clerk.
The suspension of the eight lawmakers, including members from both the PDP and APC, was announced on February 27 for allegedly holding an illegal plenary session. The lawmakers, now in hiding, claimed that security agents had been deployed to hunt them down without valid reasons.
Speaking on behalf of the suspended lawmakers, Bashir Aliyu stated that they would not be silenced until action is taken to address the high level of insecurity in Zamfara State. They initially sought changes in the Assembly's leadership to address the prolonged absence of the Speaker and his deputy from the state.
The lawmakers also highlighted an incident where some of them were attacked by thugs associated with a politician in the state during the wedding of the Deputy Governor’s daughter on February 24. Despite these challenges, they emphasized the need for democracy to be preserved in Zamfara State and called for the intervention of key stakeholders to address the situation.
