The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed the recent national grid collapse to the explosion of a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation. The incident, which occurred on October 19, 2024, caused a temporary disturbance across the grid.
In a statement, TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, explained that the substation's protection system was activated, promptly isolating the busbars and preventing a fire or further damage to nearby equipment. Mbah emphasized that the system's quick response curtailed the impact of the explosion.
Describing the situation as temporary, Mbah noted that TCN engineers at Jebba swiftly isolated the faulty transformer and reconfigured the busbar arrangement. This action has led to the gradual restoration of power supply to affected areas.
TCN reassured the public that power is being restored to the station and other parts of the grid, as the company works to stabilize the system following the incident.
