The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) transmitted 3,009MW to the 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on Sunday at 17:39 hour, despite the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) April 2024 Supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) that increased the rate for band A customers from N68.9 per kilowatt hour to N225/KWh. The Independent System Operator of TCN disclosed this on its load profile platform, as reported by The Nation.
The adjustment in tariff for band A customers guarantees a minimum of 20-hour supply daily, aiming to enhance revenue from improved service. On the same day, the System Operator reported in its “Hourly Generation by Generation Companies GenCos” that at 15:00 hour, 3,370MW was generated from 16 companies, with Dandikowa and Delta Gas contributing 0MW.
TCN stated that on April 6, 2024, the SO dispatched 4,045.17MW to the 11 DisCos, while the GenCos produced an average of 4,045MW. On April 5, 2024, the SO sent out an average of 4,066MW to the 11 DisCos, with GenCos producing an average of 4,123MW on the same day
The tariff adjustment, announced by NERC on April 3, 2024, cited the change in the cost of gas from $2.18/MMBTU to $2.42/MMBTU. Dr. Musliu Oseni, Vice Chairman of NERC, stated that 75% of the country’s energy mix is from gas and 25% from hydro. He emphasized that after auditing the capacity of over 3,000 feeders, only 500 were certified fit to serve band A customers, ensuring a minimum 20-hour daily supply. Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, encouraged customers to report any service issues to NERC.
