Tight Security, Quiet Celebration as Katsina Christians Mark Christmas

Christians in Katsina Local Government Area of Katsina State marked this year’s Christmas quietly, under heavy security presence across churches and major streets in the state capital.

Security arrangements were visibly stepped up, with both static guards and mobile patrols deployed to create a protective shield around religious centres and public areas.

At major churches such as Living Faith Church, Dunamis International Gospel Centre, the Catholic Church and ECWA buildings, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed to safeguard worshippers. Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal vans were also positioned close to church premises, underscoring the level of precaution in place.

Across the city, security convoys were seen moving steadily, especially around busy locations including Tudun Katsira, Kiddies Roundabout and Kofa Kaura, where patrols were more frequent.

Despite the strong security presence, church attendance was noticeably low. Pews that are usually filled early in the morning had visible spaces, giving the celebrations a subdued feel. Some residents explained that many people had travelled out of town to spend the holidays with family in their ancestral homes.

Speaking after the service, some worshippers identified as Tabitha, Samuel and Gabriel said they felt reassured by the presence of security operatives, even though the smaller congregation made the celebration feel less lively than in previous years.

“We feel safe because the police are here, but the small crowd makes the celebration feel a bit lonely compared to past Christmases,” they said.

Nonetheless, all services ended peacefully without any reported incidents. Messages during the services centred on the significance of Christ’s birth, peace, resilience and hope for the nation, as congregants lifted songs of praise in gratitude for the gift of salvation.
