Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, stepped down on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations.

In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged receipt of the resignation letter and expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s service to the country. The President commended his decades of dedication to the Nigeria Police Force, highlighting his professionalism and commitment to strengthening the nation’s internal security framework during his tenure.

Announcing the new appointment, the Presidency said the decision was taken in line with existing laws and in response to the country’s current security challenges. Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and leadership qualities would provide steady direction for the police at this critical time.

In accordance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. His nomination will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering national security, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional duties.
