President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose current term was scheduled to end on August 31, 2025.
The announcement was made on Thursday via a statement issued by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the extension is intended to enable the Customs boss to consolidate key reforms and oversee the completion of critical initiatives central to the Tinubu administration’s economic and trade agenda.
Key among these initiatives are:
-
The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service
-
The implementation of the National Single Window Project, designed to streamline cross-border trade
-
The execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement
President Tinubu, the statement noted, praised Adeniyi’s leadership, professionalism, and dedication, saying the extension would allow the NCS to make further progress in its strategic mandates of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service. The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate,” the statement read.
Mr. Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, bringing decades of experience in customs operations and administration to the role.
