President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the State House, Abuja, as organised labour considers a nationwide protest over unresolved demands.
The meeting followed rising tension between the Federal Government and labour unions over issues such as workers’ welfare, the increasing cost of living and the implementation of earlier agreements reached with the government.
Confirming the engagement, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the meeting was attended by key political and government figures.
According to the statement, those present included the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The Nigeria Labour Congress delegation was led by its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, alongside other members of the union’s national leadership.

The meeting comes amid the NLC’s recent threat to embark on mass protests across the country, citing what it described as the government’s failure to fully address workers’ concerns. These include wage-related issues, relief measures to ease the impact of economic reforms, and the broader socio-economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers.
Labour leaders have accused the government of delaying the implementation of agreements reached during previous negotiations, warning that continued inaction could result in industrial unrest and street protests in major cities.
As of the time of reporting, no official details had been released on the outcome of the meeting or any resolutions reached by both parties.
