Tinubu Sets Up Inter-Ministerial Committee for Buhari’s State Funeral

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate and deliver a state funeral for late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.

The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and is tasked with ensuring a dignified and befitting burial in line with national traditions and protocols.

A statement released by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, listed the committee’s members to include key ministers and top security officials, such as:

  • Ministers of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Defence, Information and National Orientation, Works, Interior, FCT, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Social Welfare (State), and Culture and Creative Economy;

  • National Security Adviser, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters;

  • Heads of Nigeria’s top security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Chief of Defence Staff.

In addition, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrances of their offices to allow Nigerians pay tribute to the late statesman.

“In honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, condolence registers will also be opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja to accommodate messages from the diplomatic corps and the general public,” the statement said.

Imohiosen noted that further details regarding the funeral programme will be communicated in the coming days.

The planned state funeral and public mourning gestures are part of a seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Tinubu, during which flags are to fly at half-mast nationwide.
