Tinubu to meet Trump over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria — Presidency

The Presidency says President Bola Tinubu will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, in the coming days to discuss accusations that Christians in Nigeria are being targeted in mass attacks.

Daniel Bwala, the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, said on X on Saturday that the meeting — which could take place at the State House or the White House — will focus on counter-terrorism cooperation and clearing up misunderstandings about the nature of violent attacks in Nigeria.

“Both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump share interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism,” Bwala wrote. He added that Trump has previously helped Nigeria by authorising arms sales, which Tinubu’s administration has used in operations against terror groups.

The planned talks come after Trump declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” and warned he had asked the Pentagon to prepare contingency plans should the killings continue. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the U.S. would consider cutting aid and “may very well go into that country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” if the government did not act to stop the violence he described.

Those comments followed weeks of pressure from U.S. lawmakers, notably Congressman Riley Moore, who alleged “systematic persecution and slaughter of Christians” in Nigeria and urged the U.S. government to take action. The Nigerian government has repeatedly disputed claims that attacks are religiously targeted, saying insecurity affects citizens of all faiths.

Bwala, while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, said the leaders share a commitment to tackling terrorism and will use the meeting to discuss facts on the ground and deepen security cooperation.

The Presidency did not give a firm date for the meeting but said it would provide further updates after the two leaders speak.
