A tragic incident unfolded along the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead as an articulated vehicle lost control, resulting in the death of an unidentified female pedestrian and injuring two others. The accident, which occurred on Thursday, was reportedly caused by brake failure.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the vehicle was descending the River Niger bridge en route to Asaba when the brakes failed, leading to the driver losing control and colliding with pedestrians on the roadside.
Confirming the incident, C. A Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer of Public Education at the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, stated, “The crash occurred today, April 4, 2024, at about 3:20hrs along Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead. It involved an articulated white and green Mercedes Benz vehicle with registration number NKE25LG."
Upon arriving at the scene, FRSC personnel transported the two injured individuals to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, while the deceased was taken to Toronto Mortuary. The Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and advised motorists to ensure regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to traffic regulations.
