Tragedy Strikes: Dam Burst in Kenya Claims 42 Lives Amid Heavy Rains

Kenya

At least 42 people lost their lives in a tragic incident when a dam burst in a town north of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. The governor of Nakuru County, Susan Kihika, described the toll as a "conservative estimate," noting that there are still more individuals trapped in the mud. Rescue efforts are underway to recover the victims.

The dam burst occurred near the town of Mai Mahiu in the Rift Valley, leading to the destruction of houses and the blocking of a major road. This catastrophe adds to the toll of 76 lives lost in Kenya since March due to heavy rains and floods, worsened by the El Nino weather pattern.

Kenya has been grappling with unusually heavy rains, which have caused widespread flooding and devastation in various parts of the country. In a similar incident in May 2018, several dozen people were killed when a dam burst in Solai, also in Nakuru County, during torrential rains.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The government is working to provide relief and support to those affected by the floods and to prevent further loss of life.
