Tragedy Strikes Swiss Ski Resort as Fire Claims Lives at New Year Party

Several people have been confirmed dead, with others injured, after a fire broke out during a New Year’s party at a popular Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland.

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, at the Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana, located in the canton of Valais. According to the Valais police, the fire started at about 1:30 a.m. while celebrations were ongoing.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion described the situation as tragic, saying the fire resulted in “several injuries and several fatalities.” He, however, did not disclose the exact number of victims or the cause of the blaze.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine what triggered the fire in the resort town, which is known for attracting high-end holidaymakers, especially during the festive season.

Police also announced that more details would be provided at a joint press conference involving law enforcement officials and the canton’s public prosecutor, scheduled for around 10 a.m. local time.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
