Ten people have lost their lives, and 48 others have sustained various injuries following a tragic accident on the Abuja-Kaduna highway. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 am, involved a DAF trailer carrying 172 male adults, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu.
Agwu attributed the cause of the crash to factors such as excessive speed, overloading, and driver fatigue, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a ditch along the highway. The injured victims were promptly evacuated to Saint Anthony and Umaru Musa Yar Adua hospitals, while the deceased were taken to the hospitals' morgues.
In response to the concerning trend of road accidents caused by reckless driving, the Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, has directed commanding officers to initiate result-oriented patrol operations and conduct mobile court operations along critical corridors. Sector Commanders have also been instructed to intensify enforcement and advocacy campaigns nationwide to promote safer road use behavior.
