A tragic incident occurred in Igga community, Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, resulting in the death of two policemen, three Neighbourhood Watch Group members, and one villager. The sequence of events began with an attack by unknown gunmen on security operatives at a farm settlement close to the community, where the security personnel were stationed to ward off herders who had attacked the nearby Nimbo community earlier in the week. Following this attack, soldiers and policemen allegedly invaded the community, burning houses, looting shops, and shooting sporadically. The security forces reportedly remained in the community for several hours, causing fear and panic among the residents. A villager, Richard Okoye, was said to have died while fleeing from the security forces.
The Enugu Police Command confirmed the attack, describing it as unprovoked and carried out by criminal elements harbored in the Igga Community. The police statement mentioned that a combined security team providing security for visiting investors was ambushed and attacked, leading to the death of the policemen and Neighbourhood Watch Group members. Three suspects were arrested, and their interrogation led to the discovery of the slain security operatives' bodies in the forest.
The incident has sparked outrage and fear in the community, with residents fleeing their homes for safety. The situation remains tense, with concerns about further attacks and the need for security agencies to restore calm and ensure the safety of the residents.
