A tragic accident on the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway claimed the lives of all passengers, including two babies, on board an Abia Line Network Sienna vehicle on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The crash occurred near Umuika Junction around 12:45 p.m. as the vehicle traveled from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to Aba, Abia State. Miraculously, the driver survived the fatal crash, while all his passengers, including two infants, perished.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver, allegedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep, crashing into a stationary truck before veering into the bush. The impact resulted in the deaths of all the passengers on board. The Abia State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, with investigations currently underway.

The FRSC’s Abia State Sector Command clarified that the crash involved a Toyota Previa, not a Sienna, and that five people—three male adults and two male children—lost their lives. The injured victims were rushed to Ronald Hospital in Umuikaa, where one additional male adult succumbed to his injuries. The FRSC attributed the accident to driver fatigue, with further details pending a full investigation.

This heartbreaking incident has brought renewed calls for caution on the roads, particularly regarding driver fatigue, as efforts to prevent such tragedies continue.
