Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have dislodged armed herders during a routine patrol in Benue State, recovering an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a magazine.
In a statement issued on Friday in Makurdi, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, said the operation took place on Wednesday at Mbakyior Outpost and Agidi Community in Gwer East Local Government Area.
According to Zubairu, the recovery was made at a suspected crossing point reportedly used by armed herders.
“Upon sighting the advancing troops, the armed herders attempted to flee and opened fire to resist interception. In a swift and coordinated response, the troops returned fire, forcing the assailants to retreat,” he stated.
A search of the area led to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition abandoned by the fleeing attackers.
The statement noted that security forces have intensified patrols in the area to deter further incursions, boost public confidence, and enable residents to continue their socio-economic activities without fear.
Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, commended the troops for their resilience, professionalism, and tactical discipline, urging them to remain alert, proactive, and responsive to intelligence from local communities.
He reiterated OPWS’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States.
