Two AAUA Students Die After Drowning in Hotel Swimming Pool During Party

Tragedy struck Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, after two students reportedly drowned in a hotel swimming pool during a party organised for newly matriculated students.

The victims were identified as Oludere Opeyemi, 22, and Adegbola Blessing, 19. The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.

According to the police, Blessing was first found unconscious in the pool around 8:00pm on January 29. He was reportedly rescued by the pool manager, given first aid and later regained consciousness. He was said to have been able to stand before he was taken home by his friends.

However, shortly after, another student, Oludere Opeyemi, was also found unconscious inside the swimming pool. He was immediately rescued and rushed to the State Hospital in Ikare-Akoko, where doctors later confirmed him dead.

DSP Jimoh added that police officers from the Akungba Divisional Police Station were deployed to the hotel that same night to begin investigation into the incident.

The hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, and the pool manager were invited for questioning as part of the preliminary investigation.

The police spokesperson further revealed that in the early hours of January 30, at about 7:00am, Blessing was also reported dead, despite earlier showing signs of recovery.

Following the development, the case has been transferred to the command’s monitoring unit for a detailed and discreet investigation.

The remains of both students have been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, for preservation and autopsy.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
