A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba has sentenced two security guards, Wilfred John, 32, and Tunde Atatero, 32, to two years imprisonment each for stealing properties from Ivory Exclusive Hotel, Gbagada. The pair were arraigned on an 18-count charge of stealing, with both pleading guilty to 12 of the charges.
Magistrate A.O. Salawu handed down a two-year sentence for the conviction, noting that the guards' guilty plea had saved the court time, resulting in a consolidated sentencing instead of addressing each count individually.
Prosecutor Godwin Oriabure explained that the crime took place on February 28, 2024, and the stolen items included four air conditioners worth N1.92 million, property of the hotel. The offence contravenes section 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
The court charged both defendants under sections 411 and 287(7) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, which addresses conspiracy and theft, respectively.
