Over 30 candidates of Nigerian origin are poised to contest in the upcoming UK elections on July 4, marking a significant presence across various parties. According to Democracy Club, these candidates represent mainstream parties like Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and smaller entities, including independents.
The candidates, fulfilling eligibility criteria as Commonwealth citizens or permanent residents, span both seasoned parliamentarians seeking reelection and newcomers vying for constituents' support. Notably, Labour leads with eight Nigerian-origin candidates, followed closely by the Liberal Democrats with six, and the Conservatives with four, including three incumbents.

Among the contenders are prominent figures like Kemi Badenoch, Helen Grant, and Abimbola Afolabi from the Conservatives, each with established political backgrounds and community ties. On the Labour side, figures such as Florence Eshalomi, Kate Osamor, Chi Onwurah, and newcomer Taiwo Owatemi are among those contesting.
The elections, set against a backdrop of increased candidate diversity and constituency boundary changes, are expected to reflect a dynamic shift in UK parliamentary representation.
