US Airstrikes Mark New Phase in Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism – Tuggar

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has described the recent United States military strikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria as a clear sign that the country has entered a new phase in its battle against insecurity.

Speaking on Arise Television on Friday, Tuggar said the development showed Nigeria’s determination to confront terrorism head-on and its willingness to work closely with international partners to achieve real results.

According to him, the strikes send a strong message to those who doubt Nigeria’s resolve. “This shows what we’ve been saying all along — that Nigeria is dead serious about the fight against terrorism and insecurity. We are ready, willing and able to work with partners like the United States and others to defeat terrorism,” he said.

Tuggar noted that the Federal Government is more focused on outcomes than on the motivations behind the intervention. He stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges require urgent, practical solutions rather than endless debates.

“We are not dwelling on the reasons given for the strikes. What concerns us are the results. We are in a dire situation and we need results,” the minister explained.

He added that Nigeria’s strategy prioritises tangible gains on the ground, saying the government is focused on what works in reducing violence and restoring safety.

Reaffirming the seriousness of the country’s security situation, Tuggar said Nigeria would continue to collaborate with any partner willing to help curb terrorism. He described the US strikes as “an indication of a new phase in an old conflict.”

His remarks come amid public discussions following confirmation that the US carried out airstrikes against terrorist positions in Nigeria. Tuggar had earlier clarified that the Nigerian government provided intelligence support and approved the operation, insisting that the action did not infringe on the country’s sovereignty.

The government maintains that the strikes are part of ongoing security cooperation aimed at weakening terrorist networks and strengthening Nigeria’s overall fight against insurgency and banditry.
