US Condemns Deadly Kwara Attack, Mourns Victims

The United States has condemned the deadly attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, as conflicting reports continue to emerge over the number of casualties.

While the Nigerian Police Force confirmed that 75 people were killed, local sources and international observers have suggested that the death toll may be far higher.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, the US Mission in Nigeria described the attack as “horrific,” stating that more than 160 people were feared dead, with many others still missing.

“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara state in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for,” the mission said.

The US also expressed condolences to families affected by the violence and welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to deploy security forces to the area.

It further commended the President’s directive to federal and state authorities to provide support for the affected communities and ensure those behind the attack are brought to justice.

The attack has drawn international attention, with reactions also coming from the United Nations and Türkiye.

Following the incident, President Tinubu approved the deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama and ordered the creation of a new military command to coordinate the response.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also directed the deployment of tactical and intelligence units to restore calm and prevent further attacks in the area.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said troops deployed under Operation Savannah Shield were already on ground to help secure the affected communities.
