UUTH resident doctors begin seven-day warning strike

Resident doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom State have begun a seven-day warning strike to protest unresolved welfare and salary issues with the hospital’s management.

The strike, which started on Monday, October 6, 2025, was announced after an emergency general meeting of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UUTH chapter.

In a communiqué released after the meeting and shared with journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, the doctors said they were forced to take action after several appeals and discussions with management failed to produce any meaningful results.

The statement was signed by the ARD President, Dr. Promise Jacob, and the General Secretary, Dr. Enam-Eti Akpan.

Among their demands, the doctors are calling for the implementation of the proper CONMESS entry level for newly employed resident doctors, and for new appointment letters to be issued reflecting the adjusted salary grade.

They are also demanding the payment of outstanding salary arrears and shortfalls owed to some members since 2023, as well as the promotion of doctors to their rightful grade levels with the corresponding financial adjustments.

The communiqué further read:

“The three members affected by failed biometric capture should be immediately paid via the GIFMIS platform pending correction on the IPPIS platform.

Payment of salary arrears owed to the 2023 batch of resident doctors.

Urgent employment of more resident doctors across all departments to reduce workload and burnout.

Renovation and proper maintenance of the House Officers’ Quarters and Call Rooms.”
