The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a devastating act of vandalism on its Damaturu-Maiduguri 330 kV transmission lines, specifically targeting towers T193 and T194. Ndidi Mbah, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed the incident, stating that vandals destroyed the towers using explosive devices, causing severe disruption to power supply.
The sabotage occurred on Tuesday night, coinciding with a 150 Mega Volt Ampere transformer tripping at the Molai Substation, compounding the outage situation. Efforts to restore bulk electricity transmission from Damaturu to Maiduguri were hindered by the damage to the transmission line.
Mbah highlighted that this isn't the first attack of its kind, referencing a similar incident on December 28, 2023, when towers T193, T194, and T195 were also destroyed. Despite previous reconstruction efforts, the latest vandalism has once again plunged Maiduguri and its surroundings into darkness.

TCN engineers, supported by security personnel, promptly assessed the scene, confirming the use of explosives in the destruction. Mbah stressed the urgent need for temporary restoration of power while plans are underway to mobilize contractors for the rebuilding of the affected transmission towers.
In response to these recurrent attacks, TCN appealed to the government and citizens to collaborate in safeguarding national infrastructure from such destructive acts. Mbah reiterated TCN's commitment to protecting transmission assets and ensuring uninterrupted power supply across Nigeria, despite challenges posed by vandalism.
