Vienna Police Investigate 25-Year-Old Homicide After Body Discovered in Apartment Cellar

Vienna

Construction workers in Vienna uncovered a body buried in the cellar of an apartment block, where authorities believe it had been hidden for approximately 25 years.

The grim discovery was made in April in the Margareten district when workers preparing for a new concrete floor unearthed the decomposing remains. The body, wrapped in plastic bags and buried in the ground, prompted a police investigation after residents reported a persistent foul smell in the building.

Forensic analysis suggests the victim, a man estimated to have been about 30 years old at the time of death, was likely murdered.

In a bid to identify the victim, police on Tuesday released photos of a burgundy tracksuit found on the remains. Despite extensive forensic testing, database comparisons, and collaboration with international law enforcement agencies, the man’s identity remains unknown.

Vienna police continue to appeal to the public for information to aid their investigation into this decades-old mystery.
