The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following his alleged marriage to Ms. Dora Chichah in the United States. A statement titled "Decree of Suspension", dated January 16, 2025, revealed that the marriage ceremony took place on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. The widely circulated footage of the event prompted the Diocese to take action.
Bishop Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, jointly signed the decree, stating that Fr. Oghenerukevwe incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension under Canon 1394 S1. This suspension prohibits him from exercising sacred ministry or presenting himself as a Catholic priest. The Bishop emphasized that the suspension took immediate effect and aligns with canonical procedures outlined in Canon 1333.
The Diocese disclosed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested to be released from priestly obligations in November 2024 but failed to complete the formalities before proceeding with the marriage. The church condemned his actions, stating they violated sacred vows, and clarified that his suspension includes all canonical implications.
While the Diocese affirmed Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s right to appeal the suspension, he must demonstrate genuine repentance and a willingness to reform. In closing, the Diocese expressed hope for his reflection and reconciliation, praying for divine guidance on his journey.
