The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of failing to honour an agreement reached before President Bola Tinubu to resolve the political crisis in the state.
Wike made the allegation on Wednesday while addressing residents during a thank-you visit to Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State. He said the deal was part of a peace effort personally brokered by President Tinubu and warned that the details of the agreement would soon be made public.
The agreement followed a closed-door meeting held in June 2025 at the State House in Abuja, where Tinubu met with both Wike and Fubara in a bid to end the power struggle that plunged Rivers State into a political crisis. The crisis eventually led to a state of emergency and the suspension of the governor and members of the State House of Assembly.
Although both leaders had publicly promised to work together for peace after the meeting, the terms of the agreement were never disclosed.
Speaking on Wednesday, Wike claimed that Governor Fubara had reneged on key aspects of what was agreed before the President.
“After agreeing on something, you renege and think you are a smart politician. You are only clever by half,” Wike said. “Very soon, Rivers people will know what we agreed before Mr President. This agreement was reached before Mr President himself.”
The minister questioned the credibility of any politician who could fail to keep an agreement reached in the presence of the President, insisting that such behaviour undermines trust.
Wike also repeated his earlier warning about the governor’s political future, saying his supporters were ready to “correct the mistake” of the 2023 election.
“We are battle-ready. We were the original mandate people. Don’t deal with people who cannot keep agreements and then hide under politics. Politics will not work that way here again,” he said.

Downplaying the role of money in politics, Wike added that victory comes from the people, not financial strength.
“If they like, let them have all the money in the world. We have defeated people with money before, and we will do it again. What matters is the people, not money,” he declared.
The FCT minister also thanked the people of Tai Local Government Area for their support for President Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, noting that their loyalty had brought tangible benefits, including federal appointments, infrastructure projects and the establishment of the Federal University of Environment in the area.
