The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, announced on Wednesday, March 6, that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) is nearing completion and will be ready for inauguration in May. He made this statement during a visit from the Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Daniel Bertrand, in Abuja, noting that the rail project is currently 95 percent completed.
Wike emphasized that the revitalization of the Abuja Light Rail is part of efforts to enhance public transportation in the nation's capital. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu's directive to expedite the project to ensure its functionality within his first year in office, aimed at easing city congestion and improving commuter experience.
The minister revealed ongoing discussions with private investors to revolutionize public transportation in the FCT. He cited a need to address security challenges posed by unregistered operators, emphasizing the importance of ensuring all transport providers are registered and identifiable to passengers.
Wike also announced plans to construct taxi and bus terminals to centralize registered public transport operations. These terminals, slated to begin construction next month pending approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement, aim to improve the overall commuting experience for residents.
