Maiduguri has been hit by its worst flood in 30 years, displacing thousands and causing widespread devastation. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), 70% of the city is submerged, including key locations like the Shehu of Borno's palace and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The flood was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, following heavy rains.
In response, President Bola Tinubu, who is currently abroad, ordered the immediate evacuation of residents from the affected areas. Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri to assess the damage and oversee ongoing relief efforts. The Nigerian Correctional Service also reported a jailbreak due to the flood, with three inmates recaptured so far.
The floods have claimed the lives of 80% of the animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo, and businesses across the city have been forced to shut down. The Borno State government has opened multiple Internally Displaced People Camps to accommodate those affected. Meanwhile, the federal government and humanitarian agencies are working together to provide emergency relief and support to the displaced residents.
