Social media platform X, owned by US tech billionaire Elon Musk, has restored its services after users across Nigeria experienced a brief disruption on Friday.
The outage, which started around 3pm, left many users unable to access the platform. Normal service was later restored, easing concerns among affected users.
Data from outage-tracking website DownDetector showed a sudden surge in complaints during the disruption. As of 8:38pm on January 16, 2026, more than 45,000 users had reported issues — a sharp increase compared to the usual average of about 18 reports.

During the downtime, users were met with Cloudflare’s “Connection timed out” error message, as pages on the platform failed to load properly.
As of the time of reporting, X had not released any official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
The incident comes shortly after a global outage on January 13, 2026, which affected users worldwide. A similar disruption was also recorded on November 18, 2025, raising ongoing concerns among users about the platform’s reliability.
