The Zamfara State Government has announced that it has successfully contained the recent cholera outbreak that hit all 14 Local Government Areas of the state, with no active cases currently remaining.
The update was given in a statement by the Ministry of Health’s Information Officer, Suleiman Isah. According to him, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Maradun, made the disclosure during an After Action Review Meeting held at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in Gusau.
Represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr. Yusuf Haske, Maradun described the achievement as a reflection of the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and prioritising the wellbeing of citizens.
She explained that the outbreak recorded a total of 15,464 cholera cases, with 15,265 patients successfully treated and discharged, while 192 deaths were reported across the 14 LGAs. She added that the state has now developed a strong Pandemic Preparedness Plan to handle future health emergencies such as cholera, diarrhoea, cerebrospinal meningitis, heavy metal contamination and other public health threats.
In recognition of their contributions, the state government has issued appreciation letters to health partners who supported the response.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) State Coordinator, Dr. Raji Mukhtar, emphasised the importance of early planning, coordination under the Incident Management System, and prompt data reporting. He noted that initial misinformation in some areas created panic, but the unified command structure later ensured an effective response.
Mukhtar commended the Zamfara Government for showing strong political will and providing necessary resources throughout the outbreak management.
The review meeting was attended by major health partners including WHO, UNICEF, AFENET, IRC, Red Cross, MSF, and other key government agencies such as PHCB, Humanitarian Affairs, and the Ministries of Information and Environment.
The session reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to strengthen public health systems and continue improving healthcare delivery for residents.
