Prison Break in Nasarawa
Sixteen inmates have broken out of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after launching a violent attack on Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) personnel in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to the Service’s spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, the inmates breached security and assaulted officers on duty in a coordinated escape attempt. Five personnel were injured, two of them critically, and are receiving urgent treatment in a government hospital.
Seven of the escapees have since been recaptured, while a manhunt is underway for the remaining nine.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has visited the facility and ordered a full investigation, warning that any staff found complicit will face sanctions. He also directed immediate collaboration with other security agencies to track down the fugitives.
Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security post.
Preliminary findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances behind the jailbreak, which has sparked renewed concerns over prison security in Nigeria.
