At least 18 people were burned to death in a tragic lone accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus along the Ijebu-Ode/Benin expressway on Monday. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm near the RCC yard, leaving the driver critically injured.
According to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the bus burst into flames after hitting a failed section of the road, causing a keg of petrol inside the vehicle to spill onto the exhaust pipe, igniting a fire. The injured driver has been taken to Rona Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at the State Hospital in Ijebu Ode.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi, while confirming the cause of the crash, warned drivers against carrying petrol in their vehicles due to the associated risks. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims.
In a separate incident on the same day, a Mazda bus crashed along Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu expressway due to excessive speeding and a tyre burst, leaving seven people injured. The victims were rushed to the State Hospital in Abeokuta for treatment.
