Plans are underway for a major opposition coalition ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with key players including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi reportedly making significant progress behind closed doors.

Although the exact terms of the alliance remain undisclosed, multiple sources confirm that discussions are ongoing to forge a formidable political force capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to Vanguard on Monday in Abuja, Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, confirmed that consultations between the opposition leaders are intensifying.

“What I can confirm is that His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, His Excellency Peter Obi, and all the opposition leaders are working diligently towards building a viable and robust coalition platform,” Ibe stated.

He added that while no concrete agreement on power-sharing has been announced, the coalition-building process is progressing steadily.

“The details are currently being ironed out, though I can’t confirm specifics at this stage. Significant progress has been made, and it’s only a matter of time before the coalition is finalised and brought to fruition,” he said.

Amid speculations of a possible arrangement in which Atiku Abubakar may run a single term with Peter Obi as his running mate, Ibe declined to confirm or deny such claims.

“These are being carefully worked out. I believe the leaders are keeping their cards close to their chest. However, once the coalition is fully established, all the details will be unveiled.”

Political observers view the coalition as a strategic attempt to consolidate Nigeria’s fragmented opposition and mount a serious challenge to the APC's electoral dominance in 2027.

For now, both camps are keeping the negotiations discreet, focusing on aligning interests, ironing out critical issues, and forging a united front.
