92-year-old Paul Biya re-elected President of Cameroon

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council on Monday declared President Paul Biya re-elected for an eighth term, after he secured 53.66 per cent of the votes.

His closest rival, Issa Tchiroma Bakary of the Cameroon National Salvation Front, came second with 35.19 per cent.

According to official figures, over 4.6 million Cameroonians voted out of more than eight million registered voters, representing a 57 per cent turnout — an increase from 53.85 per cent in 2018 but lower than the 65.82 per cent recorded in 2011.

Biya, 92, who has ruled the country since 1982, remains the leader of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement.

Under Cameroon’s Constitution, the president-elect must be sworn in within 15 days of the official announcement of results. The ceremony will take place before the Cameroonian people, with members of Parliament, the Constitutional Council, and the Supreme Court in attendance.
