A night of horror unfolded in Imo State on Thursday as gunmen unleashed a deadly attack on communities in Umualaoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie of Arondizogu, Ideato North LGA, leaving scores of youths dead and many critically injured.
The attackers, described by eyewitnesses as three unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle, opened fire between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., targeting people gathered in public spaces, shops, and relaxation spots. In one instance, youths playing the board game “draft” were gunned down in cold blood, sending shockwaves across the community.
“It was a bloodbath. Bodies were scattered. People were screaming. It was hell,” a resident recounted.
The Imo State Police Command condemned the assault, describing it as the handiwork of suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their militant arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
“This barbaric act claimed the lives of over seven persons and left others gravely wounded,” said Police spokesperson Henry Okoye. “We have launched a full-scale manhunt, and tactical units led by the Commissioner himself are on ground.”
He added that the area has been stabilized and security intensified to avert further bloodshed.
Meanwhile, Chidiebube Okeoma, founder of Stand for Humanity Foundation, condemned the attack as “provocative and barbaric”, calling for immediate action to halt the rising tide of violence across the Southeast.
“How many more lives must we lose before this madness ends?” he asked.
The massacre has plunged Arondizogu into grief, with families mourning loved ones and residents demanding accountability. Community leaders are calling on government and security forces to move beyond condemnation and deliver justice, protection, and peace.
