21 die, 144 injured in Anambra road crashes — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that no fewer than 21 people have lost their lives and 144 others sustained injuries in various road crashes across Anambra State between January and October 2025.

The Anambra Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing to flag off the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment Campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

According to her, the casualties were recorded from 57 road crashes, most of which were caused by overspeeding and distracted driving.

Asekhauno noted that the “ember months” campaign would include a motorcade rally across major parks and highways in the state, as well as a town hall meeting with drivers, transport operators, and other stakeholders to promote safer road habits.

“We want to ensure that road users take responsibility for their safety by avoiding distracted driving,” she said.

“We’ll continue to train and retrain our officers. If any officer misbehaves, it doesn’t mean they’re not trained — there will always be deviants in every organisation.”

Delivering the message of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, Asekhauno quoted him as saying the campaign theme was chosen to tackle driver-related violations that have remained a major cause of crashes in previous years.

According to Mohammed, the 2024 Operation Zero campaign (held from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025) recorded 432 deaths and 2,070 injuries from 533 reported crashes, mostly caused by driver fatigue, overloading, and unsafe practices such as conveying passengers in haulage vehicles and carrying fuel in plastic containers.

“Driver behaviour remains a critical factor in road safety,” Mohammed stated.

“The human element contributes significantly to road crashes, and this campaign reinforces the need for drivers to act responsibly, especially during the ember months when travel increases and accident risks are higher.”

He also commended the media for their continuous role in promoting road safety awareness and pledged sustained collaboration to further reduce road accidents across the country.

Meanwhile, at the national level, the FRSC disclosed that between January and September 2025, a total of 3,433 people were killed, while 22,162 others sustained injuries in 6,858 reported road crashes across Nigeria.

The Corps Marshal made this disclosure during a separate briefing in Abuja, where he stressed that the figures underscore the urgency of improved public sensitisation and stricter enforcement during the festive travel season.
