The African Union has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its activities following a coup that disrupted the country’s democratic process earlier this week.
AU Commission chairman, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, confirmed on Friday that the suspension takes immediate effect, citing the unconstitutional seizure of power.
Election observation missions from the African Union, ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum jointly condemned the abrupt stoppage of presidential and legislative election announcements, describing the events as a clear attempt to derail democracy.

The joint statement—signed by Filipe Nyusi (AU), Issifu Kamara (ECOWAS), and former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan (WAEF)—urged both AU and ECOWAS to take firm steps to restore constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau.
In addition to the AU’s decision, ECOWAS has also suspended Guinea-Bissau from participating in its decision-making bodies until democratic order is fully reinstated.
