Clichy Backs Michael Olise to Shine for France at 2026 World Cup

Former France defender Gaël Clichy believes Michael Olise has what it takes to become one of the standout players of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Olise is heading into his first World Cup with growing expectations after emerging as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents. The Bayern Munich forward has become an important figure for both club and country, and Clichy believes the tournament could be the stage where he truly announces himself to the world.

Speaking about the young winger, Clichy compared Olise’s situation to that of Kylian Mbappé before the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“We knew Mbappé was a special talent before 2018, but that World Cup was when he truly arrived,” Clichy said. “I hope Michael can do something similar.”

Although Olise has already gained recognition through his performances in European football, particularly in the UEFA Champions League, he remains relatively new to the French senior national team. The 24-year-old has made just 16 appearances for France and is preparing for his first major tournament with Les Bleus.

Clichy, who worked closely with Olise during the football competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics as assistant coach to Thierry Henry, witnessed the winger’s quality firsthand. Olise played a key role in helping France reach the final and secure a silver medal.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City defender believes Olise has grown significantly since joining Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace and is now ready to perform on football’s biggest stage.

“I know how good he is and what a top person he is as well,” Clichy said. “If he brings the same level he has shown for Bayern Munich, people will see he is one of the very best players France has.”

Clichy also highlighted Rayan Cherki as another young talent capable of making a major impact for France. Cherki, who also featured in the Olympic squad, has continued to impress with his creativity and technical ability.

“He’s an incredible talent,” Clichy said. “He has so much creative quality with both feet and never looks uncomfortable on the ball.”

With experienced stars like Mbappé leading the team and emerging talents such as Olise and Cherki pushing for bigger roles, France is expected to be among the favourites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.
