Five students of Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, who were kidnapped from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha LGA on Tuesday, have regained their freedom.
The incident had sparked panic among students, leading to a protest in which they demanded relocation to the main campus for safety. Responding to the tension, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, temporarily shut down academic activities at the Emuoha campus and ordered all students living there to vacate immediately.
Confirming the rescue on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the five students were freed during an operation carried out by police tactical teams and other security operatives at Rumuodogo 2.
She revealed that the students — four males and one female — were found unharmed and have been taken to a hospital for medical examinations. She added that the police are actively pursuing the kidnappers, who fled during the operation.
