The Nigeria Police Force has launched a Special Enforcement Team to ensure full compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive banning the use of police officers as escorts or guards for Very Important Persons (VIPs).

In a statement shared on Saturday on the Force’s X handle, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the team began its statewide monitoring in Lagos on December 6, 2025, at about 10:00 am.

The team visited major locations such as the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and several other strategic areas across the state.

According to Hundeyin, the monitoring exercise showed “satisfactory and commendable” compliance. No incidents of unauthorised police escorts were recorded, and no arrests were made.

The statement further noted that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to fully enforcing the presidential directive. He emphasized that police officers will be redeployed to focus on essential policing duties that enhance security, prevent crime, and protect lives and property nationwide.

Hundeyin assured Nigerians that the enforcement will continue across the country “without fear or favour.” He also encouraged citizens to support efforts to build a more professional, efficient, and people-focused police system.

Previously, President Tinubu had ordered the withdrawal of all police officers attached to VIPs, directing that any required personal protection for VIPs should instead be handled by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The goal of this policy is to redirect more police personnel to critical frontline duties, especially in underserved communities, and to strengthen Nigeria’s overall security response. B
