Police Arrest Suspect Over Attack on Officers at Ondo Checkpoint

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Nwabali for his alleged role in a shooting attack on police officers at a checkpoint in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, the incident occurred on December 17, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., when three armed men riding on a motorcycle attacked operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol at Ipele Junction while they were carrying out their duties.

Two police officers were injured in the attack, along with a woman identified as Taiwo, who was caught in the crossfire. All three victims were immediately taken to the hospital and are currently receiving treatment.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abayomi Jimoh, said officers responded to the gunfire and managed to arrest one of the suspects at the scene. The motorcycle used in the attack was also recovered, while the other two suspects escaped.

Jimoh said the arrested suspect, Nwabali, is in custody and has provided useful information that is helping the police track down his fleeing accomplices. He added that the suspect will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

The police spokesman noted that the arrest reflects ongoing policing reforms and improved operational strategies under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He also said the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Mr Adebowale Lawal, has assured residents that the command remains committed to tackling criminal gangs and maintaining public safety across the state.

Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and bring all those involved in the attack to justice.
