Lagos

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Wednesday destroyed several shops housed in a storey building near the Ikotun Roundabout area of Lagos State, causing losses estimated to run into millions of naira.

The affected shops were mainly stocked with electronic goods, many of which were completely burnt before emergency responders could bring the situation under control.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, stating that a distress call was received at about 12:22 a.m., with firefighters arriving at the scene roughly ten minutes later. According to the agency, the fire involved a shopping complex containing 24 shops of different sizes, all of which suffered extensive damage.

Firefighting teams deployed specialised equipment and water support from multiple stations to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Police officers from the Ikotun Division were also present to secure the area and maintain order while operations were ongoing.

The fire was eventually extinguished without any reported loss of life or injuries. Preliminary findings suggest the blaze was caused by an electrical surge linked to negligence.

The incident comes just days after a similar fire gutted part of Arena Market in Oshodi, and while emergency responders were still attending to another fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance Plaza in Lagos.
