Tinubu Says Democracy Day Celebration Marred by Abduction of Oyo, Borno Schoolchildren

President Bola Tinubu has admitted that the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations were overshadowed by the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo and Borno states, while assuring Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to secure their release.

Speaking during his national broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, the President said the nation remained hopeful that the children would return safely.

“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return,” Tinubu said.

The President stressed that security remains central to the survival of democracy, noting that his administration had taken concrete steps to strengthen the country’s security institutions.

“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits,” he stated.

Tinubu also used the occasion to commend members of the armed forces, the police and intelligence agencies for their sacrifices in defending the country against insecurity.

“To our armed forces, police, and intelligence services, Nigeria salutes your sacrifice,” he said.

He further appreciated traditional rulers, religious leaders and community heads for their contributions to peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts across the country.

“To our traditional rulers, faith leaders and community heads, thank you for your support of peace and reconciliation. The government cannot do it alone,” the President added.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security architecture and ensuring that citizens can enjoy the dividends of democracy in a peaceful and secure environment.
