2027 Election Race Begins as INEC Fixes Date, Igboho Urges Kanu to Seek Dialogue

ELECTION

Nigeria’s political atmosphere heated up on Friday following a series of major developments that could shape the road to the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially kick-started the 2027 election cycle by announcing February 20, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections. Alongside the timetable, the commission also revealed plans to request nearly ₦1 trillion to handle election logistics, citing rising inflation, security needs and improved technology.

The early announcement has already shifted attention toward political strategy, alliance-building and voter mobilisation, as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the next national polls.

In another major political twist, Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho called on detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to engage in dialogue with the Federal Government as a step toward resolving the long-running South-East crisis.

Igboho described Kanu’s decision to cancel the Monday sit-at-home directive as a positive move and said negotiation could now offer a realistic path to peace and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over the alleged attempt to arrest former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai at the Abuja airport.

Atiku described the action as politically motivated and warned against using anti-corruption agencies to intimidate opposition figures. He also visited El-Rufai in solidarity, saying such actions could damage Nigeria’s democracy, especially as El-Rufai is now linked with the ADC.
