Fubara Dedicates Man of the Year Award to Wike, Says “Weakness” Was for Peace and Survival

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained that his decision to adopt what many have described as “weakness” was a deliberate move aimed at securing peace and ensuring survival amid political tensions in the state.

Fubara made this known on Friday night in Lagos while receiving his Man of the Year award at the New Telegraph Award/Dinner Night, where he gave an emotional speech reflecting on leadership challenges and reconciliation.

According to the governor, the past months have been difficult not only for him but also for those who supported his political journey.

“Today for me is a very special day, and also special for everyone who has believed in me, and I know for believing in me, you have a share of special pain,” he said.

Speaking on the political crisis that has rocked Rivers State since he assumed office, Fubara said his calm approach has often been misunderstood by the public.

“Some of these pains, some persons describe them as weakness, while others say it as being strong, but I choose for a lot of reasons to be weak. Weak, because I want peace.

“Weak, because we need to survive. Weak, because I need to also protect those things that are dear, not just to me, but to our dear nation,” he added.

He further stated that what people call weakness can sometimes be a strength when applied wisely.

“Weakness is a virtue. It pays at the right time,” Fubara declared.

The governor also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for remaining calm and supportive throughout the political uncertainty.

“To the wonderful people of Rivers State that have shown support, shown quietness, shown maturity that has brought us this far,” he said.

In a move that has already sparked political reactions, Fubara dedicated the award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as the person who discovered him politically.

“I do not care how you interpret it or misinterpret it, I also dedicate this award to somebody who also discovered me, not minding the situation, the Honourable Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike.

“He discovered me, and it is the discovery that gave me this loudness,” he stated.

His remarks come amid growing indications that tensions between him and Wike may be easing, following reported mediation efforts by President Bola Tinubu.

The political crisis between the two leaders began shortly after Fubara took office in May 2023 and led to divisions in the Rivers State House of Assembly, threats of impeachment, and prolonged uncertainty in governance.

However, recent developments suggest steps towards reconciliation, including reports that the governor has submitted a fresh list of commissioner nominees to the Assembly as part of efforts to stabilise the state.
