FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has urged his players to take greater responsibility following two painful defeats, as the Catalan side prepare to face Levante UD in La Liga on Sunday.
Barcelona’s hopes of silverware suffered a major blow last week after a 4-0 hammering by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. That setback was followed by a 2-1 league loss to Girona FC on Monday, allowing Real Madrid CF to move two points clear at the top of the table.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash, Flick admitted it has been a difficult period but stressed the need for unity and accountability within the squad.
“I think everyone is convinced about what we are doing. Of course, in these moments it’s not easy,” he said. “For me, communication is always important. We were very honest and very open. It’s not only me telling them what to do — I want to ask them. This is how I manage the team.
“It is important because we need leaders on the pitch. They should be able to say something. At the end, I have to decide things, that is my job, but I want the players to feel the responsibility about this situation — and I think they do.”
Barcelona have received a timely boost with the return of Marcus Rashford and Pedri from injury. Rashford had been sidelined for two weeks with a knee problem, while Pedri missed a month due to a hamstring issue.

“The positive thing is Rashford is back, Pedri is back,” Flick said. “Maybe Pedri can play some minutes. The important thing is he’s training, with his quality. He’s an important player for us — a different kind of leader because of his quality. He can also be one of these leaders for the future of this club.”
Flick also confirmed that 21-year-old midfielder Gavi has resumed training after undergoing knee surgery in September 2025.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid travel to CA Osasuna on Saturday, looking to extend their advantage before Levante’s visit to Camp Nou.
