Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the breakout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his outstanding performance against Spain earned him worldwide attention and a dramatic rise in popularity.
The veteran shot-stopper saw his Instagram following jump from just over 50,000 before the match to more than 7.6 million within 24 hours after Cape Verde’s historic goalless draw with Spain in Atlanta on Monday.
Making their World Cup debut, Cape Verde shocked many football fans by securing their first-ever point at the tournament against the European giants.
Vozinha was the standout performer, producing a series of crucial saves to frustrate Spain’s attack and deny several of their stars, including teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
His remarkable display earned him the Player of the Match award and quickly made him one of the most talked-about players at the tournament.
The rise to global fame represents another remarkable milestone in the 40-year-old’s unusual football journey.
Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, Vozinha only began his professional career at the age of 25 when he joined local club Batuque in 2007. Over the years, he played in Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia, steadily building a reputation as a reliable goalkeeper despite spending most of his career away from the spotlight.

His most notable club achievement came during the 2018/19 season when he helped AEL Limassol win the Cypriot Cup.
On the international stage, however, Vozinha has been a key figure for Cape Verde since 2012 and played an important role in guiding the country to its first-ever World Cup appearance.
Speaking after the memorable draw against Spain, an emotional Vozinha described the achievement as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
“I’m 40 years old. I thought about retiring from football, but I kept going because of this dream. This award belongs to all my teammates because without them, nothing would have been possible,” he said.
The goalkeeper was visibly moved after the match as he reflected on family members who were no longer alive to witness the historic moment.
Interest in Vozinha’s social media accounts skyrocketed after Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV encouraged fans to follow him online, turning the experienced goalkeeper into one of the tournament’s biggest sensations.
Cape Verde will now face Uruguay in Miami in their next group match, with Vozinha hoping to continue his impressive form and help his country move closer to the knockout stages.
After nearly two decades in professional football, the 40-year-old has gone from being a respected veteran to one of the most celebrated stars of the 2026 World Cup.
