PDP Convention Unveils New Leadership Amid Ongoing Party Divisions

Delegates from Kebbi, Ekiti, Bauchi and several other states took centre stage at the 2026 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held in Abuja and backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

At the event, the party announced 19 new members of its National Working Committee (NWC), a move aimed at repositioning the opposition party ahead of future elections. The selection followed a consensus arrangement, with over 2,500 delegates present to affirm the new leadership that will steer the party for the next four years.

The NWC includes key positions such as National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed; Deputy National Chairmen for both North and South; National Secretary; Treasurer; Organising Secretary; Publicity Secretary; Legal Adviser; and other strategic roles outlined in the party’s constitution.

Despite the large turnout, the convention exposed lingering divisions within the party. While delegates from states like Benue, Ekiti, Ogun, Kebbi, and others actively participated, some states, including Edo, stayed away, citing ongoing legal disputes and internal disagreements.

In Sokoto, the crisis deepened further as a faction of the party defied boycott directives and attended the convention, highlighting the fractured nature of the PDP at the moment.

Party leaders, however, used the platform to call for unity and reconciliation. Key figures, including former governors and senior stakeholders, urged members to put aside differences and work towards rebuilding trust within the party.

Newly affirmed National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the convention as a turning point, stressing the need for discipline, unity, and respect for due process. He urged members to prioritise the party’s collective interest over personal ambitions.

Similarly, former Senate President Bukola Saraki encouraged aggrieved members to rejoin the fold, noting that the convention signaled stability and readiness for future electoral contests.

Wike, in his remarks, praised party loyalists for standing firm despite internal crises and called for a renewed commitment to the party’s founding ideals. He emphasised inclusiveness, unity, and a shared vision as the foundation for rebuilding the PDP.

Although reconciliation talks are reportedly ongoing, the convention made it clear that while progress has been made, significant work remains to fully unite the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
