Lagos Govt Denies Waste Evacuation Failure After Sanitation Exercise

The Lagos State Government has pushed back against claims that waste was not properly evacuated after the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Reacting to the allegations, Jubril Gawat, media aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the reports as false. In a post shared on X, he insisted that waste collection took place across the state.

According to him, the Lagos Waste Management Authority was not the only body responsible for the exercise, as local government areas also played active roles. He explained that many LGAs now have their own compactor trucks, part of efforts to decentralise waste management and improve efficiency.

Gawat maintained that all LGAs participated in the sanitation exercise and that clean-up efforts are still ongoing. He also noted that the monthly sanitation initiative is part of a broader plan to encourage environmental responsibility among residents.

His response followed criticism from a social media user who questioned the effectiveness of the exercise, particularly the handling of waste collection, and raised concerns about flooding due to blocked drainage systems.

Despite the mixed reactions, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended residents for taking part in the clean-up, describing their participation as a positive step toward better public health. He also warned against indiscriminate waste disposal, especially with the rainy season approaching, as clogged drains could worsen flooding.

The state government says it is ramping up drainage clearing efforts and public awareness campaigns to promote proper waste disposal and improve overall sanitation across Lagos.
